There is a difference. A waist cincher usually ends right before the butt and comes right below the chest, and it does exactly that; cinches the waist. They also open in the front as well and have adjustable grips (like the way a bra closes). You can get these with garters attached or without, and some have detachable garters. The ones I own also have boning, like a corset. Waist cinchers are really meant to give you that perfect hourglass shape.

A girdle is meant to really suck everything in (like Spanx). They come in different shapes and sizes (open bottom, some look like high waisted undies, some look like shorts, some higher or lower). They usually cover you from the high waist to the bottom of your butt, to give you a nice shape. Whereas the waist cincher essentially just covers the waist. Girdles also come with garters or without depending on what your preference is.

Here is another silly question. I love how my girdle will smooth out my hips and butt does not do as much for my waist. Could I wear my cincher and open bottom girdle together?
