Hello Ladies -
I desperately need help with suggestions for this dress. I bought it (I think it is a homemade vintage!! woohooo! Regardless, it's an old dress and I truly do love it) to wear for this birthday party this weekend in Nevada. I had it hemmed (yep, I did, about 3 inches) and have found that it will fit more than perfectly over my petticoat (yay!). However, the top portion of this dress is a little different than a traditional halter, which I also love. BUT there is a problem - I don't think I am "big enough" to fit the top of the dress. So I've attached pics in the hope that ya'll can give me suggestions on what to do to fix this so that I can wear it on Friday (there is one pic, with me holding right between the girls, thereby tightening the area, which is the only idea I've come up with). I've thought about the Hollywood tape, but I haven't had a great experience with that, so I'm trying to avoid it. I do go to the tailor's tomorrow morning to take in my cig pants, so if ya'll think I need to take this in as well, please let me know so I can still get it back by Friday morning. And so sorry for the boob shots - only shown because it shows the problem and where it is.
Thanks in advance for all of your help!!!
Double O Jenn =)
This is the front of the dress. Over my petticoat - see how cute the halter ties back! And the colors are actually really pretty together!
This is the back of the dress...
I squished the pic a little so it wasn't too bad, but this is the halter while standing (actually, I am leaning towards the mirror in order to take the pic, so leaning).
I've pinched the "extra" fabric together and I think I can safety pin it to the green ribbon (on the inside of course, which tightens the halter significantly (but also shows that one of the girls is bigger than the other =( - not necessarily a good thing). If I tie the neck any tighter, it chokes.
Last pic: this is what happens when I am sitting down (noticed it when I sat down to upload these, so that was a lifesaver... would hate to be at a party with little kids/teenagers, sittin and enjoying a rita, and having the girls have their own party!):
(sorry that's such a big boob in your face pic... damn camera phone!)
I appreciate any suggestions help here ladies - I really like this dress and would love to wear it this weekend!!!

I think it would look great if you had it take in by the girlies or even at the top where the plaid goes into the black halter strap possibly if you take fabric away it will make it snugger around the girls with out to much actual modifications, I make a lot of repros and modify vintage clothes and that style is suppose to be snug on the girls but comfy still so you don't have a wardrobe malfunction....
I think you're right... I just took it off after playing with it for an hour or so. If I attach the actual halter cup to the strap (which just feeds through the allowance on the halter cup, allowing it to be adjustable ties), it hugs the girls better, but still leaves a little gap. That little gap I think I can modify by attaching it in to the waistband itself. The only problem that I see remaining is that it becomes way too obvious that one of the girls is bigger than the other... but then, whose isn't? I'll play with it again later tonite ... I want to get some thinking space from it. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion!!!
You can always go an get those silicon boob wedges and put it in the side that is smaller to give that girl a little push up. That's what I do if I'm wearing something that shows the size difference.
Did you try the halter straps conventionally??...As in not crossing in the front of your neck?...and if it works...you could put a stitch in the dress to the strap to keep the cups from sliding down the straps...
I originally tried the halter traditionally, but it was a HUGEMONGOUS (in a not good way) issue, bigger than the one crossing the ties makes. I really think the ties are supposed to cross in the front, which I think is kinda cool (especially if I had the same size tatas!). But I think I fixed it... I texted the following 2 pics to my BFF's mom (who is awesome and loves me as I am...) as well as to my BFF as it is her party we're going to. I've already heard back from her mom who said it was really cute (and she's older than my mom is to boot!)! Here are the two pics I sent - the 2nd one was to show what happens when I bend over (not much, yay!):
Let me know what you girls think... safety pins were an amazing invention!! can't live without them!!!
Appreciate all of the opinions!!! xoxo
It looks great!.....loves safety pins...especially the tiny ones that go everywhere invisibly....
without them, this dress would have ended up a disaster! instead, i bought it for $1.99, and had it hemmed for $10. not bad for a $12 vintage dress!!!
Hemmed for $10??? Jenn, you're a hoot! You HAVE to learn how to sew! Then your $1.99 vintage dress would be.....$1.99. Actually, handsewing is one of the most relaxing things you can do and it's really really easy. It's also a beautiful 50s art that shouldn't be lost. Trust me, you'll love it once you master it, even if you only ever do hems.
Totally agree with you about that - I am happy with my girls. I actually ended up wearing the halter the "normal" way, and with having already pinned it where I did, it worked perfectly. Go figure! And it was an automatic tie-back into the normal halter tie...
And I do know how to sew, but I'm not particularly good at it... I tend to go uneven, and I have a very hard time threading a needle (my eyes cannot cross, so focusing on that small of a space to try and thread it proves difficult unless I'm using an embroidery needle). I'm looking at putting a machine on Lay-Away at work (amazingly, Sears has lay-away & sewing machines!!!) because there are patterns out there and fabric I'd love to work with. And you're right, $1.99 vintage would be $1.99 vintage, lol. Any suggestions on a machine?
