Hello, ladies. I am currently suffering through the harsh Virginia summer and am finally ready to make the commitment to carrying around a parasol. I have very, very sensitive skin that burns within minutes without sunscreen. While I do wear sunscreen, a parasol would also be very helpful as I'd rather wear a lighter sunscreen (maybe spf 30) than something really heavy and gross. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might find a mid 20th century style parasol? I know PUG has paper ones, but I know I'd tear it within days, and most of the ones I've seen online are either Victorian styled lace parasols (and not very effective) or basically just umbrellas. I'd like something sort of delicate looking but sturdy and able to block out a good amount of sunlight. Collapsible would be a huge plus, too. Thanks!

Hi, I've bought mine from this company. I really liked the quality and the price. I bought mine at their actual shop because I live near them and it was cheaper but I liked that they are made of a nylon/silk blend and not paper : )

Natalie, I can't seem to figure out where the shop is. Do you have their address?

"Jadetime E-Gift"

857 North Broadway, Los Angeles, Ca.

It isn't a very fancy place, they are a small shop in chinatown that happen to be affiliated with the website and have many of the parasols that this company sells.  I would suggest taking a picture/saving a picture on your phone of the parasol you are interested in so that they know what to pick out for you (all of the parasols are closed and stacked against a wall so they bring them out to show you based on color/size you ask for).  Also keep in mind that each parasol is handpainted so no two will be exactly the same.  I parked about one shop over and it only cost me $1 for parking because I wasn't there very long.  The parasol itself only cost me $5. =] I bought a pink/magenta one that I used at Viva this year and it was great.

Now, I've never purchased from them but http://www.lace-parasols.com has a lot. Might be a good start....

I just have to say, I think that's a  brilliant idea. And, I hope it's not terrible to toot my own horn to tell you that I just recently opened up an online shop for vintage inspired parasols, www.hooplaparasols.com. I am a lifelong wearer of vintage clothing and, living in Texas, was in dire need of sun protection. I'd be thrilled if you took a look at my site!

These are lovely! Thanks :)

Thanks Ann for bringing this topic up! I too have had a difficult time this year in Connecticut with the sun. Thanks ladies for sharing your suggestions!

I found mine in an antique store for $5, it was sitting off to the side, almost hidden.  I would search through your local thrift stores, etsy, ebay, etc. Good luck and happy hunting :)

I dunno if this is helpful at all, but sometimes festivals will sell them and waterproof ones too that are made with canvas and hand painted. I've even seen some nylon ones at the flea markets for cheap, they may be a quick starting point.

Have you tried a sunhat? That works well for me and is an easy addition to my pinup style.  I am not super pale, but sunhats seem to mean that I get less fatigued in the sun, so I wear one to every festival or similar event. I wear a big round beige one and pin a colored flower to the hat that matches my dress, and I add ribbons that tie under my chin to the hat to prevent it from blowing off in high winds.

Also, if you give some of the more expensive sunscreens a try, especially Neutrogena, they're MUCH less gross than the cheaper ones.

I don't carry a parasol personally so I have no advice, but if I were shopping for one I would probably go down to the local Japantown.
