Are you referring only to setting your hair or wearing them out and about? I was having issues doing mine too, until I watched LisaFremontStreet's youtube vid on how she does them... basically, she doesn't worry about doing a pattern, making them perfect or anything like that, because you are going to brush them out anyway. Once I saw that, I've been doing a wet-set everytime I wash my hair. I pin-curl the top 2/3 of my hair, including my sides, then use rollers on the back third and then sleep on it, or wear it all day til it's time to get ready for work. My only real suggestion is to make sure you don't do them too thickly if you have thick or dense hair (like mine) because they will take longer to dry. I just searched YouTube for vids on pin-curls and watched, quite a few of them, actually. I also learned that using a setting spray is essential, which I apparently already had (WonderWaves by Garnier Fructis, the spray to use if you want beach-y waves... works really well!). It beats using Dippity Do!, which is what my mom would use on us when I was a kid, lol. That's a gel consistency, whereas the WW is a spray and you can just spray section by section as you go along.

Thanks Double O' jean. Im assuming hair spray just doesnt cut it... setting spray is most likely essential in this case.. I cant wait to try it out!!!

honestly, my curls look better, hold longer, and are more versatile when i pincurl it vs. hot rollers (which was my standby) and a curling iron. although, learning from cherry dollface, you can create a pincurl from a curling iron - as you unwind the curl, don't pull and then recurl it and pin it like you would a pincurl. let the hair curl while pinned and it will hold better than if you just let it hang. she's great on hair vids as well (cherry dollface, youtube). i learned my victory rolls (which are getting better and better) from watching her... the whole watch, stop, replicate, rewind/repeat as needed thing of youtube helps enormously! when i pincurl my hair tonite, i'll take a pic so you can see what it looks like... hopefully that will help too!

I LOVE cherrydollface's videos. Mostly, I use this. I practiced, practiced, practiced and then was a pro and used my skills before a wedding. I curled/pinned, and then did my makeup while it cooled. So efficient.

As for a "wet-set", I'm pretty terrible at it. I did one last night to prep for a car show today, and I woke up with a big old mess. The curls didn't look pretty. I'll keep trying, but my hair is so fine and tends to pick up oil very quickly.

I have baby fine hair... like really really fine.

When I do a wet set... I try to do "fewer" or larger pincurls than most tutorial I see because they always have more hair than I do.

The drying time will not be a problem if you set it overnight (counting 9 hours is good) as your hair is fine : it dries quickly ! (I have to re-wet my hair before I finish setting it it's crazy LOL).

Sometimes I do 25 pincurls to have a VERY curly set... but I can go with 15 & still have greats curls ! It'll frizz less too... 

Use a setting lotion it really does help to stay in and makes it shiny... and when you brush out don't be afraid of using a veryyyy small amount of hair cream/pomade to smooth the ends and make it look glossy :). 

My hair picks up oil quickly too & I almost never have second day hair... I usually put it up in a ponytail (cute with the remaining curls !) or a scarf... No miracle here... that's how fine hair is.

This is really helpful! I have very fine hair too (have to re-wet and all of that) but then it flies all over the place and doesn't look as polished as I'd like. Is there a difference between using a setting spray or a lotion? Any recommendations on a specific brand to buy? I tried using a pomade type of thing by garnier fructis but I don't like it because it made my hair gloppy n it just didn't look right. I've been sticking to hairspray which is great for wearing my hair up but now down.

I've started using lottabody setting lotion (2 parts water/1 parts lotion) to wet my hair for setting. 

I start with nearly DRY hair and I separate my whole hair in 3 sections. 2 top sections on each sides (you can part in the middle or on the side) & then the back. 

I clip these up so they don't get in the way. 

I wet the section by spraying the lottabody/water mix so that's it's wet but not dripping and then set it with 4 or 5 pincurls. 

I do the same on the other top side. 

Then you do the back... it's mainly the same except you have to be careful about the placement of your first row : high near the crown you'll have a more all over curls 50s look & lower on the head you'll have a "smoother" crown with more body/curls on bottom whick looks more 30s/40s. 

On the back I usually do 6 or 7 pincurls when I want a "not so curly" look. 

After you finished pinning each curls... put a headscarf (sometimes I use chiffon/nylon & sometimes just a bandana !) & go to bed ! LOL

The way you're gonne style it depend on what you like but whatever you're after always brush GENTLY cause pulling the curls too hard will either get rid of your beautiful work OR create a lot of frizz. 

Hair trimmed regularly are less prone to frizz than damaged ends too. 

"modern" pomades or gel are definitely not really suited for the types of curls we're doing. 

I recommand using a wax that is made for "glossing your hair & gives a liiiitle bit of hold" & definitely NOT a "molding" one. 

Personnaly I find it easier to use a real greaser pomade... you just need a tinyyy bit of this or you'll weight down your curls and your hair will look flat (and greasy LOL) 

Just rub your finger onto the product... warm it between your hands and smooth the flyaways by stroking your hair LIGHTLY ;).

As for the brand I'm thinking about Murray's hair glo... Murray's super light...Schmiere for girls (the pink one)... You'll find all these in online greaser supply shops :).

Ok, here's what my hair looks like when I do a wetset (I try to do it when my hair is damp, not still really wet, but for these pics, my hair was really wet, not damp). I tried to get all angles, so you could really get a visual. Also, the back of my hair is set in curlers - it's too short to really do a pincurl, especially now that I just got a trim. I included a pic of the curler too - I had heard that the ones with a bristle-type on the curler keep the hair from frizzing, and thus far, I've found that to be true. Here goes (there's a lot...):

Ok, I usually don't cover them to let them air dry, but this day, the pharmacy called after I had done them, so I had to go out. When that happens, I usually cover the back with a bandanna and leave the front alone, like this:

And so this is what it looks like after I took everything out and let it sit for about 5mins. I always let it sit - I usually undo everything, give it a quick hairspray spray, then let it relax on it's own. In this set, because I had so much product in it (I always mousse when I get out of the shower, and that mixed with the setting spray, so some of the curls were a little crunchy), I didn't hairspray it:

I have fine hair too and it is dead straight, I do a wet set with Lottabody too and it is fantastic I can't recommend it enough.
