Sorry to be so nosy, but I am a little curious about what parts of the world everyone here lives in because I am interested to know what sort of reception PUG and just wearing repro in general gets in other countries!

I live in Australia but have been living in Moscow, Russia for nearly two months. In Australia I live in Brisbane and I am yet to run into anyone dressed remotely vintage. Most of the time when I go out I get a lot of stares which normally ends up with me dishing out a lot of glares because I hate it when people stare...lol. Normally teenagers can be pretty nasty, but every now and then you do get some sweet person that comes up to chat about what I'm wearing. What is it like where you live, what kind of reactions do you get when you wear vintage/reproduction clothing? Are there others that wear anything similar?

In Russia I have gotten some stares from wearing PUG, but only in the good sense I think! I have noticed that there are quite a few women here usually in their 30s, who wear either real vintage (50s and 60s style) or modern vintage inspired dresses. On one occasion I saw a man in his 40s wearing what looked like completely authentic vintage 1950s/early 60s, dressed for a day at the office. Now keeping in mind that Russia is a developing nation, it could be that his look was completely unintentional and thrifted on account of how poor people are here, but either way he looked fantastic!

So what is it like in your parts of the world? I am really curious to know!

Rockin to you for starting young! The one thing (and I mean only thing) that I would want to do over in my 20s (other than that, so glad they're over and done! 30s are awesome!).

If you live in Brisbane, Harlow, check out the Greazefest festival next month in the Valley. You'll find all the PUG style you want. There are trader stalls, music, car shows, etc. It's the Kustom Kulture for Qld along with Garterbelts and Gasoline in May and Cooly Rocks On in June. You won't be out of place and won't get stared at except for admiring glances.

I live in Melbourne.

Im from Victoria, Australia, and I have to say I've not noticed any negativity really about my "vintage" style. Most of the things I wear I have bought from local shops anyway, and individual pieces are modern fashion, it's just when I put them all into one outfit they create the look! I've had a lot of positive comments, as I dress pretty modestly when I go casual, which makes me stand out from the short skirts and extremely low-cut tops at the local pub.  I still love wearing a great heel, and showing off my figure, but I don't do it for anyone else, only because I feel great!

Hey dolls,                                                                                                                                                                                     Im from Australia, The Gold Coast In Queensland( beutiful weather) , but now live in Geelong, Victoria ( freezing/ cold)lol, vintage is prety popular in Melbourne, & almost every car show..... I love vintage outfits, I just googled rockabilly clothes & found heaps of different out fits, we have some cheap nick nak shops where I get my bandans & hair flowers from,  I dress like this most days, but when its soooo cold its hard 2 where a gr8 dress....... so its pants for most of the year, love old cars ive been in2 them ever since a little girl, in the garage with my dad...... We have 4 rods, my baby is a 55 Desoto, still needs restored :(  Im so glad my friend got my onto the site, & it seems all the ladies r in the same mind as me, soo a HUGE THANK YOU for starting it, look 4ward 2 chatting & shareing with yoall.....  :)

Hi,

I live in a smallish town in England & I never see anyone out & about dressed particularly vintage.  My town has problems with unemployment & teen pregnancy etc so I guess a lot of people don't have the time or money to put lots of effort into their appearances.

I wear mainly repro brands such as PUG, Bettie Page & Collectif & I do get a lot of stares when I am out running errands (especially when paired with my b/f who's a punk!!).  I only really get the odd comment from men who say it's nice to see a girl around here who's well put together.  The general impression I get from women in my town is that they think I'm 'up myself' or snobby because I like to wear nice things.  If I go out at night I always wear pinup style clothing & my friends are very supportive, best comment I had from one was 'You dress weird but it always look fantastic!!'.  The only thing I miss is not having any other local people that I know of who share my love of pinup fashion :(

I find it a shame that people can be so narrowminded where I live, but in a way it's kinda nice to be unique & different to everyone else!  I find there are few better buzzes than putting on a beautiful outfit & feeling confident in yourself no matter where you are :)

Hi, I come from germany and live in a town near Leipzig. In my hometown a pinup-scene doesn´t  exist...So many people look at me, when I go to work, shopping or to party. I think I'm a Freak for these people. But I love it. :)

In the big cities of germany (Berlin, Hamburg...) are PUG-styles widespread, I think.

I live in the north of Finland ( where it is snowing 8 month of the year and northern lights shine in the sky). Not too far away where the home of Santa Claus is :) Our city is small, but it actually has strong rock and heavy metal fans here. So i can see on everyday basis some goths, punk, and even few Lolitas. Though pinup style as such isn't well represented here yet and here are no stores which would have anything close to pinup.

Couple of years ago before i found PUG i saw one girl walking on the street. She was in a super huge petticoat, beautiful skirt and flower print jacket, curled hair with flowers in it... And honestly i thought she looked great, but that she was an actress coming from the show..... Yeah, i am little ashamed to admit this, but that were my thoughts. Then after a while i was seen her more and more often and always looking something like that with new skirts and dresses every month of the year. With time i started to like the vintage style and found PUG and other companies and started buying things myself. A while ago i saw this same girl in the store. I made myself come to here and say " I'm sorry, but could i tell you that your outfit is gorgeous ?! I've been admiring your clothing for a very long time now" . She smiled happily at me and we had a lovely chat then. But yeah, when you don't know and haven't seen something - you can easily missunderstand it.

I personally love huge petticoats and lovely swing dresses. I don't think people stare at me much, but i have heard couple of times something like this " Are you going to somewhere fancy ?" when we were visiting my husband's sister. Me : " Yep , i am visiting you ! " :)

It is odd actually, the bigger petticoat is under my dress or skirt - the more beautiful and confident i feel ^^

Nice going, Janelle! Classy friday, I like it...:)

That is so freaking awesome!!

Our corporation allowed us to dress-down on Fridays if we donated $2 to support the Homes for Heroes Org that they started. And dress down they did... Me and Zelda (another PUG/rockabilly co-worker who kind of gave me the balls to come all out at work) are the only two who truly embraced the dress down to mean still appropriate and nice for work... Amid the skinny jeans, flannels, and t-shirts, we definitely stand out (it ends on the 27th, which sucks because I keep finding more and more stuff that I want to wear to work but that is not black and white - or khaki!), but i also think we are the two most complimented girls at work.

Congrats to you for getting them to class it up!!!

Hello Harlow, I read your blog actually. Hi everyone else in the thread as well.

I live in Austin TX, but I'm from Houston, TX. I guess I'm kind of a different case when it comes to wearing vintage or vintage inspired things because before I got into vintage, I was goth, then I was a Lolita for a bit, then I realized I like petticoats and full skirts but Lolita was more than often too much for me so I moved toward the 50's - 60's look.I'm used to weird looks. I've been wearing vintage and vintage appropriate and reproduction looks for about a year now. I don't notice too much if I get stares or not, although my sister in law did make a comment that I had a look form the 20's (for a party) then a look for the 40's (eveyday wear) and a look for the 50's (my wedding dress) she wondered if I was just "going trough the decades" I don't think she meant it harshly though. Often at work I'm a hairstylist and I rock vintage appropriate  looks in black, white and grey and the clients love it , so most of my reactions have been positive.

Austin has kind of a rockabilly vibe, but I still don't see too many girls in any of the pin up brands, we do have two rockabilly stores that carry hell bunny, sourpuss and other rockabilly brands but either I'm not running into the girls that shop there or I just haven't been going to the right places. Austin also has a big scene of people who dress in vintage, but its usually a hipster type of vintage, very 70's mixed with americian apparel, urban oufiters look. I haven't worn my two pin-up girl dresses out yet (though I used to wear my bathing suit by pinup girl all the time before it got too small), but I'll see what reactions I get when I do.

Hi Ashes, I see you are from Austin. I love Austin TX! I went there in 2007 for the Lonestar Roundup and it's been my fave place in the US ever since. We are back there next year for the same event. Even though it's car and hotrod focussed I'd expect to see a lot of pinup styles as well. Have you been to it?

I have a question. What is the lolita look? I've been dressing vintage long before there was ever a name or a style for it. It was just me and what I liked so the names always amuse me.....rockabilly, burlesque, pin-up, wiggle dresses, steampunk and now lolita. None of these names existed when I first started hunting out my wardrobe from thrift stores! I was just considered odd.

Hey there, Soozi,

Yes I've been to the Lonestar roundup, that was the place where I've seen the most vintage fashion ever. The lolita look is a japaneese fashion movment that takes inspration from 50's, rorcoco and little girl style dress. here's a bit of info on it http://www.lolitafashion.org/
