Back in the PUG day, starting around 2006, Masuimi & I would do photo shoots for Pinup Girl. Masuimi has been modeling for the website since 2004, but until 2006 my homie Octavio (NSFW) did most of the shoots for the site, including this famous photo of Masuimi in the original Greta Dress:
By the way, this dress is coming back - someday!
Anyway, so when Masuimi and I would do shoots, it was super basic. Masuimi did her own hair and makeup, so we didn't need any sort of team. Either she and I would be in the studio together, or we'd be running around on location, just the two of us. We'd always have a total blast, since we have a similar way of working, which is:
1. Get as much done in the first 3-4 hours, since our attention span can't handle working on one thing much longer than that
2. Embrace distractions and detours, you never know when it might result in an amazing shot, or a great vintage mall find (Like the giant oversized bird cage Masuimi found in Joshua Tree a couple of years back)
3. Stop as soon as you're bored or tired and find a good place to eat
-------------------------------------
Over the past couple years, however, Masuimi and I have done less of these sort of shoots. Our shoots have gotten bigger and more elaborate, and so Masuimi has been part of our huge Spring and Fall Collection shoots, or shooting in-house with Lori, Holly, or Margarita. Plus, my eyes are starting to go and shooting with a normal digital camera has become a bit of a hassle for me, what with me having to put on my glasses to check my focus through the viewfinder (Seeing A Clockwork Orange as a child has insured neither contact lenses or anything else will come within 10 feet of my eyeballs). And if it's not obvious by now - I don't like a hassle! But Masuimi and I have really missed our photo day trips, so we decided to load a few outfits into the car and head to the beach to see what kind of trouble we could get into. The results are below. Enjoy!
I wore my Olive Green Sean Top and the amazing, fabulous, everyone-needs-one Mermaid Skirt featuring the art of Steph Buscema. I figure it worked for our location. Masuimi wore a couple of things, but first I put her in an outfit I am jonesing to own, the Deadly Dames Red Twill Cigarette Pants along with Pinup Couture's Black & White Stripe Boatneck Top: We never knew there was a trapeze school at the Santa Monica pier! We're both scared of heights, so we decided to go in and talk to the Trapese School people about taking flying classes. Because the correct thing to do with fears is FACE THEM!
We ended up hanging around talking to them for quite a while, Sara & Morningstar were really great, and suggested that we dress their flyers in PUG pieces and shoot them while they're doing the rings, silks, etc. We thought that was an amazing idea so stay tuned, we'll probably be collaborating with them in the near future <3
We didn't get this lovely lady's name, because we suck. But everyone at the Trapeze School New York was very nice <3
Of course, a trip to the arcade was in order. Masuimi can pose while doing literally anything, including playing whack-a-mole:
I, however, can only do one thing at a time, in this case KILL IT playing my early-80's obsession Ms. Pac-Man:
Masuimi tried so hard to get me to look at the camera but I was all MASUIMI THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS
So we spent a little time at the arcade:
Then, Masuimi changed clothes again and we headed over to the rides and the boardwalk. We tried to imitate the bathing beauty on the wall:
I feel like Masuimi did a better job:
As is par for the course whenever Masuimi and I are out in public, a fan stopped her for a photo. Masuimi is always happy to oblige <3
I went and photographed the roller coaster in the meantime:
And then, it was back to taking photos! Warning: Gratuitous Upskirt Photo Below
Hey, it's not a party unless either I or Masuimi are half-naked in public
We were about to leave so we asked a passer-by to take a quick photo of the two of us:
And then we headed home! We had a total blast, and we can't wait to start trapeze classes <3
Until Next time! Love, Laura and Masuimi
I don't know if I can quite put it into words what this is, but this is the reason I LOVE Pinup Girl Clothing the way I do, and why it's the amazing community that it is :)
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!
No wonder PUG is all about having fun.
I love this so much <3
I love this post so much.
The best part about these photos? You guys look like you're having a blast!
Like everyone else, I love this post, I love you guys, and I love PUG; also I am totally stoked that Greta may/will be coming back one day...I had one, and for various reasons had to sell it, and it's the only dress I miss from 'the old days'...please bring her soon?
