Well here we! Less than one more week from Halloween, and only a couple of days until the big weekend Halloween parties, which along with raiding the Halloween candy stash is my favourite part of Halloween :)
Captain America Dancing Girl
I'm going to be going to a fundraising ball at a local theatre on Saturday, one I've been to for the last few years with my husband where a lot of our friends go. Now this is my second Halloween since REALLY falling in love with the Pinup GIrl Style, and so of course I'll be going with a vintage Pinup Style Halloween costume again :)
Last year I went as a Captain America Dancing Girl from Marvel's Captain America movie. It was a costume I just compltely fell in love with after I saw the movie and I just knew I had to have one of my own :) It turned out I wasn't the only girl in love with the costume, there's an entire Facebook group dedicated to showing you how to make your own Dancing Girl costume and organizing get togethers at conventions and events. Now until this year it was the hardest costume to make, and I give all the credit in the world to my costume making friend who kept making ever adjustment she had to make on it so it would flatter in all the right places.
In the end it was totally worth it, it was absolutely my favourite costume that I'd ever worn, and though you couldn't see it I was still sporting PUG! The Vintage High Waisted Pinup Bikini Shorts in bright red was perfect for looking like old fashion underwear :)
I'm still hoping to organize a get together and photoshoot of other Captain America Dancing Girls at the Rockabilly Weekend this year, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that :)
Playboy Bunny
So that brings us to this year. Originally, my idea was to go as a Radio City Rockette. I had the idea because someone at the fundraising ball last year who HADN'T seen Captain America thought that's what I was dressed as. I told them that wasn't the case, but the idea stuck with me. I had every intention of making the Radio City Rockette dancer my costume for this year until I sat down with my costume making friend in August to get started and we realized a couple of issues. Namely, with that faux-fur coat on, even with your legs full bared it was going to be a VERY WARM outfit to be wearing.
Now I've never been afraid to suffer a bit to an awesome look (just ask me about my Slave Leia costume days :) ), but in the end my husband suggested another costume for this year that would be a little easier to dance in, the classic Playboy Bunny.
This was just another one of those moments where you saw something and knew that it was meant to be. Now if I'd thought that last year's Captain America Dancing Girl costume was fun to make, this outfit was nothing but torture for me and my costume making friend. We spent two whole hours just one night this week adjusting it, trying it on, re-stitch it, trying it on again. Luckily after a lot of head pounding and cursing the designers of the original outfit, we were able to to stitch everything together that needed to be stitched and get everything covered that needed to be covered.
It REALLY looks gorgeous and I'll definitely be sharing the pictures after Saturday's ball :) It was also fun finding out how hard it is these days to find compltely seamless hosiery without the built-in brief's for a costume with a leg opening that sits high on your hips. It's not impossible, just a HECK of a lot harder than I and my costume making friend ever figured ;)
I think I'd still like to go with the Radio City Rockette down the road, it's the sort of idea that will just bug you in the back of your brain until you actually make it happen. I'm not sure if it's what I'll go with next year though, which brings us too...
PUG as a Halloween Costume
Now since wearing the red high waisted shorts UNDER my Captain America Dancing Girl costume doesn't quite count, I would still love to give this a shot, wearing a PUG outfit AS a Halloween costume. Miss Liz E. Borden had a really good discussion page on the forum about this topic, and it really showed that a lot of PUG ladies were thinking along the same lines of using PUG outfits for a vintage costume and or look.
The powers at be here at PUG even got in on the action and suggested the Hello Sailor Playsuit on their Facebook page as an awesome Halloween costume, and who could ever disagree with this outfit? :)
Now the first costume that comes mind that you could make out of a PUG outfit (at least to my mind) is of course the Military Secretary Dress in tan. I mean, talk about va Va VA VOOM! It's a dress that really looks like it hugs all the right places and just LOOK at what it does for the bust. Come to think of it... why HAVEN'T I bought this dress yet? Ah yes... money... my old foe ;)
Another idea came to me just the other day though, and I think that it's another PUG outfit that will be my Halloween costume for next year... the Vintage Bikini Top and Vintage High Waisted Short in leopard! Now the selling points for the outfit as a bikini itself are obvious. The top is an AMAZING top. It's actually very covering but gives you a lot of cleavage at the same time, but because it's covering it's probably one of the most secure tops that you're ever going to find. As for the high waisted bottoms, I had to try them on for myself to discover this but the high waisted style is made for women with real bodies. Whether it's big hips or big tummies, it doesn't matter because the high waisted short flatters them all.
Where this comes into play as a Halloween costume is this... 1950's swimsuit pageant winner! All you need to add is a winner's sash, a tiara, a Bettie Page hairstyle and a bouquet of roses and you have your costume!
The only problem is that both the top AND the bottom are currently out of stock, and I can see why. So PUG, please Please PLEASE re-stock them some time between now and next Halloween :) Barring that I think I'd totally go with the Military Secretary, either way I'll definitely be sporting PUG for next Halloween!
A Baby Shower Dress
Lastly I'm going to mention the dress that I'm going to be wearing to an upcoming Baby Shower this Sunday. I posted a question on the forums a little while back about which dress in the PUG catalogue best suits a baby shower, and I got a lot of really good answers, Brandi Shuey suggested I go with a Netti Dress and I definitely agreed that it was the best way to go.
Then yesterday morning I was just browsing shrugs on the site and I came across not only the Perfect Pinup Shrug in Black Ponte, but the Ginger Dress in Pink Atomic Print too. Oh... My... GOD this combination was just too beautiful to pass up. I was so afraid that even if I ordered yesterday before 10am PST I wouldn't get the dress and the shrug for the weekend, but PUG you guys have come through again. I think it took 24 hours to the minute to get to where I am on the other side of the continent, not bad eh? The FedEx guy rang literally just as I was typing up the part on Halloween costumes :)
Anyways, I'll wait until Sunday to post some pictures of me in the new outfit because I literally just stepped out of the shower and my hair's a mess and I have to get ready for work. In the mean time have a look at my forum post on Embarrassing and Funny Stories and I'll see you guys after the weekend.
Take care!
Tahitia :)
