Just like every other vintage loving lady, I find myself obsessing over old photographs of woman done up. Whether it be to the 9's, or to a ballgame, I love seeing what color combos they came up with outfits, their jewelry, shoes, accessories, everything! Back then they didn't have to 'try' to look 1950s... they just were- hah!
One thing I always notice but usually stayed clear from was the greatest of all accessories - the hat. I always thought they didn't look good on me, but come to find out that majority of woman think the same thing! But when you see photos of woman wearing these vintage hats , EVERYONE looks amazing and that's a fact! Something must of happened in history where woman just stopped wearing them.
I have made it my personal resolution this year to wear more hats. So far, 5 weeks into the year I have worn a hat 5 times. A think a hat a week is a good goal! I instantly feel classier, ladylike, mysterious even sometimes spy-like ( it's the right hat!) and I without a doubt get a compliment on it ( even though I have been telling myself for years I look silly in them or that they're over the top- we must get that out of our heads!)
I know it sounds silly, but consider doing it! It adds a little pep or swag in your step <3
Hats are something that sadly has gone out of style, mostly I'm sure due to taking care of them and its something extra to deal with but I agree are wonderful. So many styles and can really make a outfit. Also if you ever have trouble finding hats that work with you, find a hat shop and at least talk to them. Most should be helpful and many times since some can be invest will be happy to answer any questions or just try on different styles. Good luck on your goal!
It has been said that due to the increase in the use of the automobile [ the interior design of seat to roof measurements ] is the main culprit for the ' goin out of style of hats , mostly mens hats . Also a loss in the woman's fashion hats is the hat pin . I find that the ever versatile beret is a great bet of an accessory for the head.
I love hats! I don't wear them often enough but I wear them when I get the chance to. In fact while with Ms Auburn Hills when at the Vintage Fashion Fair in Santa Monica last Sunday I wore a vintage hat I bought at an antique store. Here is a pic the I've already posted in my blog:
And from my first ever photo shoot done with Mila of Glamorama here is me wearing another vintage hat:
Aoife, the hat in your first picture is terrific, but that second photo...WOW! What a gorgeous shot.
I have a bunch of hats and I love them, alas I rarely wear them. I think this year I will make more of an effort :)
I was just thinking earlier this week that I need to get more into hats and fascinators. I have a decent vintage/retro style, but I am just not an accessories person. This will be the year of me becoming an accessories person. The accessories are what truly polish a look.
... and now I want to head straight to my local consignment shop to hunt down some fabulous hats. Damn you :-)
I bought hats. I blame you. In the best way, of course.
Like you've said I've always thought maybe I don't suit hats, but then I just think I don't care if I don't. I love these hats and I'll wear them no matter what anyone else thinks. Recently bought another amazing hat at an antiques mall.
I wear hats each and every day. And if I'm not in a hat, I'm in a scarf or do-rag. And by do-rag, I mean vintage scarf tying my hair up off my neck while I clean houses (one of many of my professions). I love hats to a fault. I will have to catalog how many I have now. I've lost count! I know I have a least 30. But there are some in summer storage as well so I'll have to dust them off and wear them again soon! Love hats! They absolutely make or break the outfit.
