Over here at PUG HQ, we always joke about all the stories we never get to tell, of the assorted craziness that comes with this job. Whether it's a client, a supplier, a model hopeful, or an artist's agent. Here's a story we feel needs to be told, and we're willing to risk appearing "unprofessional" by telling it.
Many long-time PUG fans and customers understand our policy on models. In short: We are not a model agency, nor do we use one to find our models. We are arbitrary and picky, and openly so.
We aren't just picky about looks. We care about your personality, your ethics, and the way you treat others, especially other women. If we feel that your personality isn't compatible with PUG's personality, we will not put you on our website.
This is our right, and I personally will never apologize for this.
Another thing many PUG fans understand is that I and my employees are honest, open, and opinionated. However, Micheline and I have noticed that when we express our opinions as independent persons on pages outside the PUG facebook page, we are frequently gaslighted - told that by expressing a contrary opinion, we are being unprofessional and that our actions are "bad for business".
Well, we happen to disagree. If we are on a social networking site and have an opinion on something, we have just as much right to express it as anyone else.
As for anyone who hears our opinions and think we suck? OK. I'm not a big fan of that dude from American Apparel, subsequently I don't shop there. We're not for everyone!

Part 2:
And because it feels somewhat relevant, I will include a video I did a few weeks back about dealing with online bullies:
First of all I want to thank you for making your items available to all shapes & sizes. I started shopping with PUG almost 6 years & can honestly say I've NEVER gotten a dress I didn't like. You can see the pride, love, & care that has been put into each item. I have several dresses from my first purchase that have held up beautifully. My personal favorites brands/collections are the Pinup Couture (thank you for bengaline stretch!) , Deadly Dames (I own all the DD tops ever made & have 5 DD dresses all are perfection), & my new favorite Laura Brynes Black Label (OMG the quality of this collection is AMAZING! I own all the Joanie Tops & 2 Dovima Dresses & am eagerly awaiting the Pris Dress). I can always count on a size chart with measurements that actually work.
Secondly I respect the fact that you have taken the time & energy to surround yourself with good people. Obviously it is important to you to have a happy, healthy, work environment which is not the easiest thing to do. You're customer service have always been outstanding & probably why I continue to shop with you time & time again. When I was in customer service for 15years my biggest complaint was that the "squeaky wheel always got the oil' ie the Ahole customers who bitched the most got the most attention & best service. I made a point to really given my all to those special customers who were easy to deal with. And I appreciate that you do that as a company.
Lastly, That fact that some unscrupulous model is causing so much undo drama is a sad sign of the times. Unfortunately I have seen more & more of this behavior with in the invent of the internet. Some people are just not mentally unstable & can't deal with not getting their way so they wrongly think that bullying will get them what they want. So sad that they are so socially retarded or have been lead to believe by weaker people that this is acceptable behavior. As an older woman (46) I can honestly say other woman have disappointed me more than my male friends. Women can be so cruel, manipulative, & self serving. I wrongly thought this behavior was only in jr high & high school but found out this continues most of your life bcos some women see you as a threat, competition, or someone to further their gain & popularity. Sincerity, loyalty, & honest are rarely qualities. One of my favorite quotes "Sometimes, we expect more from others, because we would be willing to do that much for them."
Because you care about who represents your clothing you have a stellar image. Not everyone or every company can be PUG. What makes you so special is you are here for the sincere & loyal people who love you. This website is a testament to that.
I can't believe women want to bully their way into modeling. It is obvious that you have a fabulous company because y'all work hard and work together. Maybe jealousy is part of her problem. We need to empower women and lift each other up not tear them down.

I think because we make ourselves so accessible, some people take that a little bit too far and assume that because we do things like interact with our fans & customers and even choose our models from this group, that we should be responsive to their wishes re: modeling for us, etc.
This isn't the first time we've had this issue. People forget PUG has been around for 13 years. Most of the people we deal with are normal, nice people. But there is always a small minority of people who are self-serving and believe that they can bully and manipulate their way to success. It never works out. I am a good 20 years older than the average PUG customer. This may not make me smarter than anyone, but it does mean I've seen about 20 years more stuff, and things don't change that much. These sort of shenanigans never end well. We've had models send us nasty emails telling us our business is going downhill because we're such meanies, etc. Not sure where those models are now, actually.
Some people should just be greatful that they've found their niche with this lifestyle. I was SO very lost, depressed and full of self-loathing until I found PUG and all the wonderful women who participate in it. It's amazing to be accepted and even applauded for being yourself and loving the way you look for the first time in a long time. Something so simple as being able to buy clothing that Fits, can really change someone's life. I know it changed mine. I've got my spark back :) Thanks to PUG and all of ya'll.
I love how Luna was eavesdropping on the conversation ;)
I'm with Victoria. I was in a sad place as a woman when I found PUG. I had being a Mom and Wife down, but couldn't figure out me. One day while strolling the internet I came across the PUG website and then FB page and seriously it helped change me. I started taking the time to make sure I looked, and FELT good. It helped improve all aspects of my life. I had to learn to embrace a new body that 2 children in 2 years had given me...it isn't the twiggy figure of yesteryear but darn it if it isn't an even HOTTER body. ;-) It helped me realize WHY I never wanted to get dolled up...these new fashions didn't call me, they didn't make me feel beautiful. Something about the pinup look and life calls to me in every way. I used to shrink from attention, now I square my shoulders, fling my hair and face it head on. So thank you all and I know you will always have at LEAST one loyal fan/customer as long as you are in business...and we all know all these wonderful ladies on this site would agree. (Well except for the disturbed lurkers who might be around, but we'll ignore them.)
So that was my long winded way of saying ROCK ON ladies, you are an inspiration.
I think what you shared here will resonate with many more people that it will alienate. The integrity with which you conduct yourselves and your business is a fine demonstration of confidence and strength - not a poor business decision. I also appreciate the passion. It allows me - a total stranger - to sort of be proud and root for you as I would dear friends. I expect the same honesty, humor, and compassion from them and I don't think you could offer a customer or model or employee anything better than that.
This is why I love PUG
