I don't know how to start this discussion honestly. I'm always curious when I look through all your photos and read your bios. No one really talks about what they do for a living. I guess I wonder this because I work such an obscure job that I always imagine all the PUG enthusiasts are well known celebrities, or powerful business women because you are all so beautiful.
I work in the offshore oilfield, 6 months a year I'm offshore on a barge or a boat and usually there aren't many girls. I wear steel toe boots, a hardhat, and pants. I never wear makeup and my hair is always in a ponytail. The other 6 months out of my year, I'm usually in a dress with full makeup and my hair done.
So I guess what I'm asking is what do you guys do for a living?

You have the best life (in my humble opinion ;) ). I miss my bike, so much. And love the sound of the rest of it! Stay on that pedestal - love to you and your family!
I'm a lab technician at Texas A&M University. Unfortunately I can't wear my awesome PUG gear to work (I would hate to get dead pig bits on my Vamp dress), my work uniform consists of jeans, t-shirts, and comfy shoes. I don't bother with my hair or make up, I'd rather not dip my hair in some horrible chemical and make up would just rub off on my goggles or lab coat. I help prep all of the freshman biology labs on campus. We have around 120 sections of lab with 5 different courses in the fall semester. I love my job (most of the time), there is always some new crisis or problem to solve which keeps things interesting. I graduated from a smallish university called Sam Houston State with a BS in biology with a minor in chemistry. I like the fact that I don't have to put much effort into my appearance at work because it makes it that much more fun on the weekends when I have time to fix my hair, do my make up, and wear my super cute PUG gear of course! Attached is a picture of me with one of the coolest things I've seen at work...a giant deep sea isopod!
I work at a major zoo as a senior gorilla keeper. I also work with all the other primates but my area is mainly with the gorillas. I have a blast and love my job. The most rewarding aspect is getting animals who previously never trusted anyone to completely trust you and allow you to work with them. When I come in in the morning and all the gorillas grumble vocalize (happy vocalization), that really makes my day knowing they're happy to see me. Besides cleaning and feeding I also do operant conditioning training, and physical therapy with these animals. I have to wear a uniform and end up going to work with no make-up on and my hair in a ponytail. I end up smelling like animal fecal matter, urine and BO at the end of the day. The only time I can look like a lady is on my days off. I'm a full-time mother of 3 children (2 yr old twins and a 10 month old), happily married and love going to work in the morning. After my kids are a little older, I plan on volunteering at an animal rescue training and rehabilitating dogs so they can go up for adoption. I also plan on traveling to natural disaster areas to help rescue animals in need. Life doesn't get much better for me! I'm all about kids and animals!
this is basically the most badass job I have ever heard of. You should have a reality show. It could be called "fear grimace" and we could put all the gorillas in PUG dresses and take them to the "real housewives" set.
or maybe I should just lay off the coffee, for crying out loud.
I'm a night shift waffle house waitress...*le sigh*
This is a great discussion! It's so cool to get a glimpse into how wildly different people's lives can be, even if they share similar interests.
I'm a medical ethicist. I am finishing my PhD at the University of Washington in Public Health Genetics. My job is fairly diverse - primarily I evaluate large scale genetic research protocols to ensure that the design and conduct are ethical and relevant, but I also do a lot of my own research, and this year I will be working with the law school to write a textbook on genetics and the law.
I think it's fascinating how many people have mentioned feeling judged or misunderstood as a result of their style. I find that working as an academic scientist will garner you plenty of raised eyebrows as a woman to begin with, which has resulted in a lot of very traditional second wave feminist inspired revolt. However, much of this is also a rebellion against traditional standards of beauty and femininity, and so I think it's very natural for many other women in the field to feel some immediate distrust for more feminine women. That being said, it doesn't bother me too much. I have had many people fail to take me seriously because of how I look, and ultimately the consequences of that oversight are their problem. The bottom line is that who you are is your business, and unless you're making who you are obtrusive or obnoxious, anyone who wants to sell you short or put you down in simply displaying their own unattractive insecurities. You guys are all beautiful and amazing, and It's great to part of such a cool, diverse community of unique and confident women. Thank you all for being yourselves!
Gee, thank you! I don't mind telling you the list is probably not extensive.
p.s. I think your job sounds kick ass! My undergraduate work was all in neuroscience and the research going on in sleep and sleep behavior was really remarkable. I would love to hear more about what you do!
xo
Well sleep ends up being between respiratory and neurology. My masters in sleep requires me to know the neurological basis of sleep, sleep proliferation, and the changes in the neurotransmitters during different stages of sleep, and sleep medicine during development. But clinically, I need to have a spectacular understanding of primary and secondary respiratory disorders (which are more common), and the effect sleep have on them (makes me pretty uncomfortable when a patient who should be on NIV isn't because the resp consultant doesn't listen to me because of my age and look). I'm Australian, but live in the UK - so sleep is still not sexy enough for real funding. Doesn't change the fact sleep disorders are *%&ing common. spaghettilady1983@yahoo.com.au
i am grateful for you all, since my partner has sleep apnea and does outrageous things at night. The noises are the worst! It's like the sound of scavengers feasting on pudding. Whoever invented the CPAP has saved Mike from being strangled about 500 times. So do you do the cool thing where you hook people up to wires and watch their brains sleep? How do you measure aggregate concentrations or changes in neurotransmitters during sleep?
I actually have two jobs. I currently work as a forensic investigator for the county medical examiner and I am also a college instructor for the community college up here teaching death investigations and deviant behavior. Needless to say I do wear scrubs for my autopsy job but kick it up a notch in PUG for teaching.
