Hi all!
So I just recently heard about the Viva Las Vegas weekend coming up next month. (I know. I am SO out of the loop haha). I'm really curious about it, but the website doesn't give a very good impression of what the events are actually like. Also, I'm a college student working part time for low wages, so I need to know that it's worth it before I invest all the money it would take to go! I was hoping someone could answer some questions I have. :)
1. Overall, what's it like?!
2. Does everyone dress up all vintage-y?
3. Is there anything to do at the Car Show besides only looking at the cars? (Don't get me wrong, I love old cars, but unfortunately I would most likely ONLY be able to attend the car show, not the other event.)
4. My husband is pretty old fashioned and modest (also has never been to Vegas before!)... So, since this is Vegas... How risque does it get?
5. How far away from the main area of the strip (the MGM, Exaclibur, New York, New York, etc.) is it?
Thanks everyone!!

1. It's a rockabilly lifestyle event. Cars, a pinup contest, stuff for sale, you get to meet other pinups, I imagine there's probably going to be food.
2. Every dresses up extremely vintagey. If you're not wearing vintage that's okay but you're going to see people in everything from authentic period pieces to REALLY FORMAL dresses. You'll also see people in capris and t-shirts.
3. Car shows are mostly car shoes, you can take photos with most of them. It's more fun if you're open to meeting people.
4. Some girls go in just their swim suits
5. You'll be able to get between the two pretty easily. I think it's like a 4 minute drive from the Orleans to the MGM
Awesome. Thank you so much for the info! Have you been before?
That's awesome. That's one of my favorite things about this type of fashion- it never goes out of style! :) ;)
2. Not everyone dresses up in the style. I distinctly remember reading that somewhere but I'm sure a lot do.
I'm doing some blog posts about it - www.pinupatheart.wordpress.com and I've done past posts about it - just search Viva Las Vegas on my blog.
Viva is IT for me - I look forward to it more than anything all year. I tell everyone it is my favorite holiday. :)
PS - to answer your questions:
1. It's amazing. I have no words to describe it. You literally just have to go and experience it.
2. The fashion is all over - some people wear jeans and tshirts, some people wear repro, some people wear $300+ vintage. I see people come in with loads of vintage luggage even.
3. If you're just attending the car show there are tons of vendors. There will also be bands playing most of the afternoon. I believe the Miss Viva Las Vegas competition happens at the car show too.
5. Risque - depends. Some girls show alot of cleavage but overall I don't think it's too bad. The boobs tend to come out more at night haha.
6. I don't think its too far from the strip. And some hotels may offer shuttles.
I would definitely recommend coming for the whole weekend if you can. I don't think the car show is a very good representation of the event as a whole. Its fun but Viva is so much more than the car show. :)
Thank you so much for all the info- I will definitely check out your blog posts. If you don't mind me pestering you with more questions, what else is there besides the car show? I know the website has another event listed, but the ticket is quite a bit more expensive. Do you know what it consists of? Also, where would you recommend staying?
EDIT: Thanks so much for directing me to your blog. I loved reading your posts, and they helped a lot!
Thanks again!
I have never been, I will be going this year to only the Saturday car show. I was reading there will be bands playing, including Imelda May, there will also be vendors including PUG. You can check out the website for more info. If your only going to the car show I don't think your husband needs to worry, I don't think it will be risqué. I used to live in Vegas and he would only need to worry if you guys were going out on the strip at night or to a nightclub. It is at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, which is not on the strip, it is in driving distance though, if you guys wanted to walk around the strip during the day it has less of a "party" atmosphere. Hope this helps :)
I am so jealous! That was almost my plan for this year, but I think we've decided that it would be better to wait and be able to go to everything next year... I appreciate the info! I hope those who go post pictures afterwards. I would love to see them! How far away is the Orleans from the main part of the strip? Is it within walking distance?
Besides the car show there are vendors in the hotel itself, music - bands playing all night long, Dj's playing all night long - people literally dance until 6-7 am; pool parties daily with vintage mens, womens and couples swimwear contests daily, Charles Phoenix slide show, burlesque shows, burlesque bingo, fashion shows, dance lessons, people watching and most important meeting people who love what you love. :)
