Hey ladies! I have recently decided to move BACK to Southern California but I am only familiar with the San Diego area. Ideally I would like to be in the Los Angeles area. While I have traveled there plenty and can get around relatively well I would love some advice! I'm a hairstylist and would obviously start fresh and I am already losing my nerve to make the jump as I've had people tell me I won't be able to afford it and will struggle.
Is anyone else a stylist out there, making it on their own? I'd love to get into a commission based salon full time but if not immediately possible I'd be open to working at a blow dry bar like I already do and then maybe assisting or something else part time. I just need to be able to make the rent and not be stressing like I do already.
What am I looking at as far as renting a decent studio or 1 bedroom apartment by myself while working full time as as stylist? Is that going to be impossible starting out? Will I have no other choice but to go towards a roommate situation? Any and all advice you have would be lovely.

It depends on what area you'd be interested in moving to. Some areas are pricier than others but you can expect to pay around $950-1200 for a 1 bedroom apartment depending on the area…maybe you can look up salons in LA on yelp and call each of them to see if they have any openings and then look up what area of LA each of them is in?
I'm in Orange County (about 35 miles south of LA) but LA is so big, I think you need to narrow down where you want to live/work. The Valley is really hot, but has some cute areas. The downtown Burbank area, where the PUG boutique is at, is especially cute, but may be pricey. Long Beach is cheaper and has a lot of salons. It can be really ghetto or really nice depending on where you live. Personally, I go to a vintage salon in Orange County and there is only ONE vintage salon here, along with ONE in Long Beach, so if you specialize in vintage styles, that might be something to think about. There are more vintage stylists in LA, but many of them are freelance, so perhaps reach out to them for advice? Good luck and welcome back to California!
Julie, what is the salon in Long Beach? It never hurts to know of the various resources here in So Cal.
I believe it's called Salon Pop - I have some friends that speak highly of it. I don't think they specialize in retro hair, but if you want someone that knows how to give a middy cut, etc., they can do it. I was considering them before I found the Vintage Hair Salon. For as many people as there are sporting the rockabilly style in SoCal, you'd think there would be a lot more stylists and salons specializing in this look, but there aren't!
