Sorry to be so nosy, but I am a little curious about what parts of the world everyone here lives in because I am interested to know what sort of reception PUG and just wearing repro in general gets in other countries!
I live in Australia but have been living in Moscow, Russia for nearly two months. In Australia I live in Brisbane and I am yet to run into anyone dressed remotely vintage. Most of the time when I go out I get a lot of stares which normally ends up with me dishing out a lot of glares because I hate it when people stare...lol. Normally teenagers can be pretty nasty, but every now and then you do get some sweet person that comes up to chat about what I'm wearing. What is it like where you live, what kind of reactions do you get when you wear vintage/reproduction clothing? Are there others that wear anything similar?
In Russia I have gotten some stares from wearing PUG, but only in the good sense I think! I have noticed that there are quite a few women here usually in their 30s, who wear either real vintage (50s and 60s style) or modern vintage inspired dresses. On one occasion I saw a man in his 40s wearing what looked like completely authentic vintage 1950s/early 60s, dressed for a day at the office. Now keeping in mind that Russia is a developing nation, it could be that his look was completely unintentional and thrifted on account of how poor people are here, but either way he looked fantastic!
So what is it like in your parts of the world? I am really curious to know!

Hi,
I'm from Newfoundland, Canada, and live in a pretty small town. I don't actually dress vintage that often, mostly when I go out (which lately seems to be never), and rarely at work (I teach and most of the PUG I have is not really work appropriate). And I'm not that good with hair, so I don't do a whole vintage look. However, whenever I do wear my vintage clothes, I always get compliments. And I feel fabulous!! I sometimes feel a bit anxious that I'm overdressed, but the people at the mall in pajama pants don't seem to care about being underdressed, so what am I worrying for? :) I should have no problem being the best dressed woman in the room!
Deanna -
I hope that my blog will help you see the vintage inspiration that is all out there so that you CAN pug (but not PUG) while teaching - and teaching the youngins' how appropriate is done!! I'll let you know when I get done with this weekend's intro... and the first issue's inspiration is Lucille Ball, which is very interesting...
you know, if you're interested. =) Double O Jenn
I live in Bellingham, WA, which is about 1 1/2 hours north of Seattle.
I do get some looks around town, but none of them are really nasty. I've received lots of compliments and they are mostly from women. I haven't really seen any other people dressed in the PUG fashion, but if you're out there I would love to meet! :)
I wore my royal blue Heidi with a red crinoline underneath for a 4th of July festival and received more compliments than I ever have in my life! haha
I'm in the PNW too! Just further south in the Tacoma area :)
Hey! I'm in Redmond/Kirkland, across the lake from Seattle, south of Bellingham, but I'm in Tacoma a few times a month. Went to college down there. Maybe we could all meet in the middle sometime for lunch or something. :)
I have never gotten overt negative attention for my pinupwear, though I'm not really hardcore. Then again, the Seattle area is pretty artsy, and where I work, wardrobes range from "oh, did I wear this t-shirt yesterday too?", to full-on steampunk. Ah, tech. :) While I do wear lots of jeans when it's cold and wet, I do wear flowers in my hair every day for my own personal splash of sunshine. I get compliments on my dresses, but yes I do get more double takes if I wear a petticoat. I do have a "light" single-layer petticoat that I wear that isn't as big, and love it. It gives a little body without taking up the whole elevator. It's from Vamporium (Etsy, she's in NZ but shipping is reasonable and the quality is lovely and fabric is so soft).
I love the structure of these styles, Being a curvy girl, especially, I feel so much more at home in these vintage styles than so many modern cuts that either make no room for boobs and booty, or assume if you're size 12 or larger, then you must have no waist and want to wear a tent. Please. It's also so easy as a fairly-new mom of a tiny human to throw on a dress and suddenly feel so put-together. I honestly think it takes less time than pulling on sweats, and it makes me look and feel so much more competent.
I get compliments from older generation folks, men and women, for dressing "smart" and "classy". My friend's teen daughters want my closet. My friend's 4 year old wants my "swirly dresses!" My husband thinks my swing dresses are adorable and my wiggle dresses hot. I need more PUG business cards, because I'm always getting asked where I get them. My friends would probably just shrug and say "Jen just likes to dress up."
For my grandmother's 99th birthday, I went all out, vintage hair, makeup, yellow Evelyn, red heels, the works. She was so thrilled. "You look like a REAL movie star!" Made my day. Going to do the same for her 100th next month. :)
Be beautiful, ladies, just as you are. :)
That is awesome! If my grandma was still here, I'd like to think she would say the same thing to me!!
And you are so right about curves and being over a size 12! I am now a size 12 (after about 5 yrs of over that) and tents-r-us was about the only thing out there, unless you wanted to pay a fortune and have it altered... although I will share one plus size secret - maternity wear (even if you're not preggers)... it allows for the extra belly and curves and today's styles, no one knows it's maternity (and no, if you get the right size & style, it doesn't make you look preggers). I still occassionally do it!
I'm in Olympia and I wear my PUG around town - a few weeks ago I was at the Farmer's Market in my red and white polka dot Anna dress and a guy kept staring at me until my 3 year-old son said,"You can't look at my mom!"
I'm in Brisbane as well! I totally know what you mean....! I feel out of place a lot of the time, but ALL of my friends are lovely and adore what I wear so that makes me feel much better!
I'm from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. We have some lovely vintage stores here & have recently seen 2 modern retro boutiques open up in the city.
I have to wear a shapeless unisex uniform for work & don't bother with makeup at work since I'm often getting splashed in the face or blasted with steam (I work in a kitchen) so I really appreciate getting all dolled up when I go out! I am also quite busty with a small waist & small shoulders, so I always had trouble finding things that fit well off the rack until I discovered PUG :-)
Rockabetty!
Hi everyone!
I'm from Kingston, Ontario, and have always lived in Eastern Ontario.
I get all my vintage-repro stuff off PUG, Topvintage.nl and bettiepageclothing, so far - with occasional pieces from stores here and there in the city - peter pan collars and polkadots seem to be relatively common in our stores (American Apparel, Urban Outfitters etc.). Saying that, there's not a TON of rockabilly/vintage-loving gals in the city, but there's definitely a niche crowd. A few of our city's derby girl team members are, and as we have three campuses, lots of students are about with different tastes. As I mentioned, with the common pieces in our stores, most of the girls wearing peter pan collars or swing shoes etc, are wearing it as a fashion piece - more as hipster-style than full blown 50s style, if you know what I mean. When you go to rockabilly/psychobilly shows, the real dedicated crowd all come out of the woodwork - I love to see it :)
At work, I get occasional sarcastic remarks from other staff when I dress up a lot, but for the most part people seem to appreciate my taste. I work with seniors, I think they really like my cat eye frames and big skirts, reminds them of the good old days I suppose! Hah! I tend to feel a little out of place when I'm downtown, the bar scene here is all short skirts and skimpy tops. I wore the black haunted housewife out one night and I got asked if I was a nun! LOL
There's an amazing little store downtown here called Get Funky, that sells rockabilly-inspired clothing - lots of sourpuss, folter, Iron Fist, Lucky 13 and Fluevogs etc etc. It's a great store (especially for shoes) and the store owner is a really nice gal, and will let you order stuff from her catalogues. Their selection of in-store dresses is limited, however, as it's a small shop.
Any other PUG fans from the area (Eastern ON), please feel free to add me as a friend! Since I don't know anyone on here, that's a good of a place as any to start on a friend's list :)
Hello everyone!
I'm Yvette Louis. live in Brighton, Co. USA. It is a suburb of Denver. I have always been inspired by my grandma's fashion and music. When I was in elementary school we would have 50's day...my FAVORITE school day of the year. I would help my mom make my poodle skirt and strap on my saddle shoes! AND it all stuck =] Colorado tends to be very laid back and sporty in style, so I'm a little lonely in the vintage department. In high school I got really into the punk/psychobilly sceene. Like someone mentioned earlier, it is fun to go to the shows and see everybody come out of the woodworks. I don't get to dress up for work but I always have my eyeliner and pin up hair that I get complements on. I have never heard any negative comments on my style, but I don't really care/notice it anyways. I'm just me. Plus my hubbie loves me all dolled up =]
Pin Up Style is a great way to see others like me =]
